Fig 4.7: The possible trajectory of life

You can change the trajectory of your line, the trajectory of your life. How do you do this? It’s not that difficult.

You are, at this very moment, at a choice point.

You take on the frame of being like a child. You stay curious and open. You keep learning, exploring, questioning, growing and dreaming.

Busting age-related stereotypes

Don’t conform to the negative thinking about age

A stereotype is a fixed, over-generalised belief about a particular group or class of people. So, it’s simply a generalised way of thinking about a specific group. Now that we understand the pervasive influence our beliefs and thoughts can have over our behaviour and outcomes, maybe we should choose the thoughts and beliefs that empower and grow us, and not the ones that limit and diminish.

I often hear people in their 30s and 40s say that “things” stop working properly and that recovery from injuries takes forever. I guess every decade brings with it a set of changes, challenges and limitations. And while there are naturally changes that occur with age, we don’t have to adopt and believe everything we hear around us. As we rehearse these sayings, we’re sending commands to our nervous system and we start experiencing them.

The more you repeat and believe these sayings, the more likely you will be to see them manifesting. But, by challenging deeply held stereotypical beliefs and constructs about ageing and health, you give yourself the opportunity not to fall prey to the sayings and affirmations of the day.

About a year ago, my sister Nerissa had hip surgery and was on crutches for a while. People noticed this and enquired what was wrong. Her standard answer was: “Old age”. She had grown tired of explaining her story of what actually happened. Soon, however, she realised it was this answer itself that made her feel heavy and tired. It made her feel like there was no hope and life would be downhill from there. So, she changed her answer to: “This happened because I danced on one too many tables!” She evoked laughter and felt lighter herself!
